The Mare

Sabrina was born on a cool spring morning, just after 2 AM. One of Bill's favorite shows on Broadway was Sabrina with the story of the chauffeur’s daughter becoming a lady, and it seemed to fit this appealing dark bay filly who had extra sparkle in her personality. From the beginning Sabrina seemed to be a miniature version of her mother, Able Spirit. Their personalities are quite similar and they had the same athletic abilities – extremely good bascule over fences, super knees and excellent movement. The only significant difference between mother and daughter is found in Sabrina’s canter being a vast improvement over her dam’s. South American Way was very prepotent for improving a canter, so it is safe to say that he had a very positive impact!

Her temperament is much like that of her mother and grandmother. Sabrina has her opinions but always remains a cooperative lady in all areas – whether you are riding her or just working around her on the ground. She inherited the It Factor from Able Spirit and can gauge the size of an audience and adjusts her performance accordingly.

Sabrina’s show career was mainly in sporthorse breeding, low level dressage and hunters. She perfected the art of ‘stand and look pretty’ and returned home with several championships to her credit. As her dam was aging out of the breeding mare herd, Sabrina’s undersaddle career was rather brief – we did not want to waste her best breeding years.

Sabrina had her first foal in 2004 by Rosentau (Celle State Stud). Ruben WF sold as a two year old into our lifelong friend Janet’s care. He has made great progress in his undersaddle training under Ryan Wood's tutelage and is beginning his eventing career! Her other offspring have all been by Waldaire – Wei WF (2006), Westley WF (2007), Wolfgang WF (2008), Wilson WF (2009) and Waldina WF (2010). Wei has begun her undersaddle training and is progressing nicely. Wilson is showing all signs of being an outstanding A Show Hunter - he has the beautiful face, big, well set eyes and the robust body type combined with the flat kneed trot that wins the hacks...it would be a shame to 'waste' him in a dressage or eventing home!

We were lucky to have had this lovely daughter of Able Spirit in our mare herd to further the genetics here at Watermark Farm. Sabrina was a delight from the beginning to her very last day here on the farm. We continue to enjoy her offspring and look forward to both their breeding and riding careers.
